The Blue Chair

I love everything old and worn, tattered and torn,
chipped and cracked, faded and rusted.  Everything that shows how much it was used and loved.
Things that have a history, even though I don't always know what the history is.
The not knowing adds to the magic.  It allows me to imagine, to create stories
about who had the piece before me.  They add to the stories of my own home.

I found this little wooden chair with it's perfectly chipped blue paint.
Paying $10, it was a little more than I wanted to pay, but I knew if I walked away
I would regret it with my first step.  I'm happy I kicked my stubbornness to the curb.

A patchwork seat cushion, and she'll be perfect at the desk,
or at my sewing table, or maybe in the living room with a stack of scrappy quilts.

Sharing with Cory.

(She will be painted with a clear encapsulant.  Should the paint contain lead, and most
from before 1970 do, this will prevent exposure.  I love objects with old, chippy paint.
I do not like my kids being exposed to toxins.)

  2. love the colour. would be quite unusual here where back in the day everything was either black, white or simply wood.

  3. I have never hear of using a clear encapsulant. I have a doll sized rocker and cradle that were my great grandmother sitting in the garage because I wasn't sure how to deal with the lead paint. thanks.. I will investigate more!

  4. I LOVE that color too, and would have shelled out the $10 easily for such a cool find.

Please share more about the encapsulant...as I have never heard of that, and it will open up a whole new world of chipping paint that I can consider now!

  6. Jules and Claudine -

encapsulant is a nontoxic, water-based sealer that seals lead paint, creating a barrier, making vintage pieces safe to use. it's used a lot on older pieces with chipped paint to keep the integrity of it's vintage appearance. apply it with a brush just like you would regular paint. :)

  9. so that sounds like a sealer? perfect for dealing with lead paint that wants to stay lovely and chipped.
    and lovely colour too.

it IS a little pricey for a chair, but sometimes you have to think of item-before-purse lol. i walked away from a set of 3 maugham books last year and still regret it!
